Classic gameplay on a new system!, February 11, 2007 Rating: 8.3/10 By Mitch Clubhouse Games, in my opinion, is a more quiet and relaxing version of Wii Sports for the Nintendo Wii. Or maybe it’s the other way around? Either way, Clubhouse Games is exactly what it sounds like. Handfuls of various “clubhouse” games ranging from darts to Battleship have been compacted down into the Nintendo DS, each game programmed and set up accordingly to how they would be presented in real life. The premise is pleasing, especially if you’re an older gamer who isn’t too into titles like The Sims and Nintendogs.
In total, Clubhouse Games packs 42 different games, and all of them are pretty much different from the last. A lot of the games have different categories of skill level, too, and some of the games spread out across different genres, such as card games, in which you’ll find 18 different variants. Then you move on to board games, where there is 12 different titles… see the pattern? Most games are a realistic digital version of what you’d expect to have sitting in front of you. A lot of the games go from the quiet, relaxing board games to entertaining titles such as Darts and Bowling.
The best part? Clubhouse Games allows you to activate the DS’s Wi-Fi to get involved in a lot of multiplayer activity. The vast majority of games allow online play, save for a few titles such as the offbeat card game or two. A lot of them are actually a lot of fun, such as Battleship (which was renamed Gridlock), because it was always a two-player game to begin with, but playing with someone that isn’t sitting directly across from you makes it a lot more fun.
CPU controlled bots will take a second players place if you don’t have a friend to play with, but not all games require that option, since a lot of the card games have dealers thrown in and games such as darts can be played alone.
There’s also some dialogue in the game, most of it from the card games, and it’s all shadowed by cheesy lounge music. It’s a pretty humorous premise when playing, but when it gets repetitive, it can be disabled. The graphics are pretty cheesy as well, ranging from a mixture of bright card tables all the way down to bland bowling lanes. To be honest, the animations look like they were designed at Disney, but they fit the atmosphere nicely.
All together, Clubhouse Games is a DS specialty when it comes to travel, and is almost the equivalent to Wii Sports, except you’re not sweating and taking a nap at the end of gameplay.
