Yet another action RPG. Flame on!, January 19, 2007
Rating: 9.8/10
By zeroinitiate
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is another isometric action RPG that follows the tradition set by X-Men Legends 1 & 2, Justice League Heroes and Champions of Norrath. It features a star-studded cast of superheroes from the Marvel universe as they fight to save the world from the machinations of Doctor Doom and his Masters of Evil. Although it's really more of the same thing you played before, you'll still find plenty of things to like in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

The game starts with an attack on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s helicarrier. With the odds stacked against him, Nick Fury issues an S.O.S. to all nearby metahumans, prompting the appearance of Spiderman, Wolverine, Thor and Captain America. Shortly after that you'll get the chance to form your own team from a roster of Marvel's finest. The Fantastic Four, Storm, Daredevil, Iceman and Iron Man are only among the possible heroes that you can use. Although some of them have to be unlocked, you'll still end up with a lot of possible combinations to play with and that creates some variety in gameplay.

Speaking of gameplay, those who played any of the recent superhero-based action RPGs will find Marvel: Ultimate Alliance familiar territory. You have an isometric view of the action where you take your four heroes on a romp across Marvel's imagined landscapes. You have two attack buttons that can do combination attacks given that they're pressed in the correct sequence, a jump button and a grab button. Your team's special abilities are executed by holding R2 and then pressing the corresponding button. When your enemies die, they drop red and blue orbs, filling your health and energy respectively. It's also possible to pick up money that you can use to buy upgrades for your characters.

Grabbing your enemies are fun because you can beat them to submission or toss them aside. You can even do both, similar to old-school beat-em-ups. It's a welcome addition to the typical action RPG gameplay mechanic that's becoming a little old by now. Also, the orb-collecting from fallen foes means that you can't stock potions or any healing items. This becomes evident when your characters begin gasping for their lives during boss fights. Fortunately, hitting a combo on a boss occasionally causes orbs to drop, preventing boss fights from completely becoming button-mashing affairs.

Gaining experience in combat causes your characters to level up. You can customize their powers, abilities and costumes to your liking. Character customization is not as deep as it is in X-Men Legends 2, but what's in there counts. Costumes can be upgraded to provide bonuses such as additional health or increased energy regeneration. One character gets four costumes that each grant three bonuses, so aside from aesthetics there's a practical benefit to it as well. Customization is optional though. In fact, your characters distribute their points automatically by default so it doesn't get in your way. You can turn this off if you want to. Flight, as always, isn't free. Previous Marvel-based games required you to spend points in flight in order to lessen your energy degeneration. While flight is automatically enabled for characters who can fly, they suffer a penalty when they perform certain attacks in mid-flight. There's also a lot of room for experimentation since you can reallocate points that you previously assigned. That new power you acquired a few levels ago not paying off as much as you'd like? Take the points out of it and reinvest them on something else. You won't get a refund on the cash you spent to get the points in the first place, but at least your choices aren't permanent.

The graphics are pretty standard for games of this type. Character models have enough detail to be instantly recognizable and the additional costumes are a plus if you're a Marvel fan. You'll also get a virtual tour of a lot of Marvel's environments such as Atlantis, the Stark Tower and Asgard, all of which are presented well by the game's visuals. The CGI sequences are pretty good, especially those that involve a lot of action. Of particular mention is Nightcrawler's movie. I'm not going to spoil it for you other than saying that it's a lot of fun to watch. The music and sound effects are passable but it's the voice acting that makes the audio great. There's an extensive amount of voice work in the game and the actors do a convincing job of portraying the heroes and villains you'll run into.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a good action RPG that features a lot of familiar concepts if you played games of this type before. If you like action RPGs or if you're a fan of Marvel comics then you'll find a lot to like in this game. It has nearly non-stop action and there's plenty of Marvel lore that you can dive into. Characters are animated and voiced faithfully. You'll also find using their powers a lot of fun. The optional character customization makes this title more approachable compared to similar games in the genre. Overall, you're very likely to have a good time playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.
