Yoshi's back!, November 20, 2006 Rating: 8.8/10 By Mitch Remember Super Mario World for the SNES? That game, quite frankly, is a hit everyone has played and everyone would pretty much played if they had access to a copy today. What a lot of people don’t know is after Mario came Yoshi’s Island, a strangely colored yet appealing game replacing Mario with Yoshi himself, and introduced some new and fun gameplay elements that made it very fun to play. Now, like Nintendo has been doing lately, it’s recreated Yoshi’s Island in the same exact fashion and increased it’s gameplay to heighten its replay value and make it a great game.
Everyone knows who Yoshi is. He’s the big cute dinosaur that Mario would usually ride when he had the chance to assist him in completing a level. Yoshi can jump higher, float for a short period of time, and use his tongue to swallow up enemies and spit them back out as projectiles. Yoshi’s Island turned out to be a completely different game, involving a lot of new techniques to play around with. In the original Yoshi’s Island, while completing the levels, Yoshi had Baby Mario on his back the whole time, and if he fell off and wasn’t collected within the time limit, you lost. It sounds weird, but it actually made the game a lot more fun, giving you some sort of responsibility while playing.
Now, this isn’t an exaggeration: Yoshi’s Island DS is exactly the same, but longer, and better. Obviously, the graphics are better, but the same rendering and level designs have returned to take players back into the world they remember. In terms of improvements, the levels are absolutely huge. The 2D side scrolling action has been pushed out to be played in 50 huge levels, with over 100 bosses to battle along the way, and dozens of different paths and methods to completing levels.
The most superb and gigantic improvement is that not only does Baby Mario return, but there are a handful of other babies from the Mario series that give Yoshi different advantages on his back. A Baby Wario, Baby Peach and even Baby Donkey Kong are just a small sum of examples that show up. When they’re safely harnessed on Yoshi, they provide different powers that will allow you to complete the level in a lot of different ways and encounter secrets, pushing the replay value to all time high.
Nintendo has been known for appealing to younger kids, but this game is just great for those who dwelled in the SNES and still do. It’s made by the same exact people too, so you won’t find any inaccuracies or anything to put the game down.
