Reviews

Terrible., November 19, 2006
Rating: 2.6/10
By Mitch
Back when Jaws Unleashed came out for consoles, I heard some nasty reviews… well, to be honest, I was searching websites for the worst games of the year to laugh at. Six months later, Jaws Unleashed came out for the PC, and when I got to play a copy my first instinct was to come on XGD and rant. So, here I am, giving you the breaking news of one of the worst games I’ve ever played, at least this year, which is amazing. This is 2006, soon to be 2007, and when games like this come around, you start to think. How can developers ignore STANDARDS? How can they avoid making something that’s good? Unless Jaws Unleashed was made by 12 year olds, I expect no excuse.

Jaws Unleashed is based on the movie Jaws. It fast forwards the old timeline to present times, where Amity Island, the setting of the film, is the new grounds for a marine corporation to begin their studies which somehow sends the marine life into a turmoil, thus disturbing a gigantic shark which you take control of. It’s obviously not the same shark from the movies, but the resemblance is just, “wow.” It’s unrealistically huge and hungry, and Amity Island is its playground. Sounds good, right? Wrong.

For starters, the gameplay is terrible. It has both missions are free roaming capabilities, giving you the entire outer-island area to hunt down food, whether it’s animal or human. To stay alive in free roam, you’ll need to eat, so when you come across that person swimming in the beach or that dolphin going about his business, they’re yours to chomp down on. The attacks are basic and boring, and at times, completely bizarre and laughably ridiculous. For example, humans on decks and beaches can easily be picked off and eaten. It sounds kind of good when you read it, and adds a new edge of assumed terror. An innocent person going for a walk on the beach… everything is quiet… and suddenly, a shark pops out of the water and eats them.

Unfortunately, the method is nothing like that. Jaws can literally jump out of the water and bounce across the beach to pick up prey, and simply bounce back in. This is one of the many ridiculous methods of feeding that made me laugh and get irritated at the same time.

Missions are no better. They’re boring and stupid, involving some of the most insane techniques and methods to get the job done, such as grabbing scientists and swiping them against card readers to get doors open. They’re rather pointless, too: a lot of them don’t progress any type of storyline in the game, if there even is one.

Jaws Unleashed made me laugh for a long while, and why the developer brought this to the PC, I don’t know. A waste of money it is indeed, and it’s recommendation level is at an all time 0%.
