WOW., April 10, 2006 Rating: 9.0/10 By Mitch It’s quite surprising to see a new FPS that isn’t trying to be completely like Halo, but borrows just little elements to get away with being original. You don’t even need to play the original to like or understand this game… mainly because it has absolutely nothing to do with the first plot at all, and it’s good all together. If XGD had a Game of the Year award, I’d have to imitate Gamespot and give it all to Far Cry Instincts.
We reassume the role of Jack Carver, an ex-militant who’s been hired to escort a reporter across formerly war torn islands, so she can get a couple good snapshots and written material. It doesn’t take long before she’s kidnapped; mercenaries blow up your boat, and your fighting with your bare hands and assorted firearms to survive. Speaking of survive, that’s the main theme in this game. More or less, it’s like the TV show survivor, with blood, guns, and death. We’re thrown into this island, with various different methods of hunting down the bad guys. We can stalk behind them, in the deep brush, tearing our butterfly into their back, set traps on trees to take them off their feet and down to their grave, shoot ‘em up, and later in the game, we’re able to do a lot more crazy things, because we ourselves change. But in the meantime, lets discuss normal Jack. Sometimes, we don’t even need to go to our enemies. All we need to do is flick a stone, make enough noise, and get the curious mercenary to walk on over and meet his death.
The landscape in this game is huge, and widely presented with its excellent graphics engine, which can regulate light and water textures to look more than realistic. The jungle we’re thrown into looks very real, and the graphics engine helps makes each plant, rock and tree look merely real. The bases we’re able to infiltrate are also very interactive, with various switches to hit to disable alarms, and others to enable the opening of gates. In the beginning of the game, before we reach deep, underground levels, the surfaces on top of the world look quite realistically built. In the middle of a tropical jungle, we won’t find any concrete outposts or iron fortresses. Mostly everything is made out of wood and bamboo, with the occasional garage and bunker. Why would we need a garage, though? Well…
Far Cry Instincts has a short range of interesting vehicles to commandeer, both water and rough terrain. Land vehicles consist of machine gun mounted Hummers and ATV’s, whereas seaside we’ll get a hold of some jetskis and powerboats. Occasionally, we’re taken into the air, with the completely original and unique hang glider.
Back to Jack Carver. The hunt is turned around when Jack is injected with a mysterious syringe, something that will change him into an animalistic hunting machine which now makes him a predator. If you weren’t expecting this, like I was, you’ll enjoy it even more. Jack can now jump massive distance, run at amazing speeds, and attack ferociously. We can now cycle through different vision modes, able to track the prey more easily. For example, enemies leave behind human pheromone traces, which we can easily see if we’re in the right vision mode. With Jack’s newfound strength, he can now dig his claws into the enemy and send them screaming and flying to their death.
I’d hate to be sadistic, but killing random guys with guns it really fun. Far Cry Instincts packs a nice rag doll physics engine, so slapping humans into trees with your hands won’t get old that quick, as you’re not likely to see the same thing over again. Enemies are plentiful, and if you’re expecting to shoot your way through this game, you’re mistaken. Even though we’re gifted with super human strength equivalent to a T-Rex in human skin, bullets hurt. Duh. Stealthy actions are your best idea, so if you’re a fan of Splinter Cell in the first person genre, you’ll enjoy this game a lot.
I recommend this game to anyone who likes video games. Hell, I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t like video games. I don’t care if this game isn’t your type. Please play it. Come on.
