Same Game but is that a bad thing?....., November 14, 2008

It might be abitt unfair to call Gears of War 2 the same game as the first one because it has a wider range of Locust, longer more in depth story and the characters themselves seem to have more depth and personality.

I bought this game while I was still deep in the war torn world of Fallout 3. I didn't really want to get to involved in another game before I was completely finished with Fallout but thought what the hell it will only be as long as the first one. So I started the game that very Friday.

Before I tell you about the game I have to mention the quality of the limited edition. I buy alot of limited edition releases, I don't know why cause I know its really just wasting extra of my hard earned cash but I just like the extra little quirky things you get with them. Alot of special have loads of extras like figures, tin cases, music cd's etc... Where as GOW2 was quite simple, the game, a making of DVD, a book, all in a nice metal case inside another card case. And not to forget a photo of Dom and his Missus. Nothing spectacular it just seemed tastefully done.

Anyway down to the important part, the game itself. It starts up pretty much where the last one left off. You meet up with Anya ( the woman who gives you your orders in the first game), you and Dom are given a rookie to train which is worth doing just to see if you still got the moves. I found that the controls and general feel of the game had not changed at all from the first game so it was dead easy to get into. The training of the "rook" takes you straight into the action and before long your off to war with the rest of the gears ready to take the fight to the locust.

Where the first game gave you a real sensation that you are in a war zone it seems to be heightened this time round, at times their is a real sense of "use whatever you can get your hands on", I don't really want to spoil the game so I wont delve to deeply into that but I will say their are a few interesting vehicles!

As you would expect from a sequel you've got new weapons, new enemies and slightly improved graphics (walls now show great damage taking concrete blocks right down to the reinforcing bar from gunfire). Oh and this time around no Krill, I don't know about you but I found it quite tedious playing the second time round having to stay out of the dark avoiding little bats.

The story mode itself isn't the longest game in the world however its about another 1/2 on top of the previous title however their are loads of achievements to unlock through a number of difficulties so if that's your sort of thing it could keep you going for weeks. Their are also the many multi player modes available. These include co-op campaign (live or split screen), multi player various team games (live or split screen), and a new mode called Horde where you and you team take on a horde of enemies on a certain map then when you've killed all the enemies another tougher horde spawn and the game gets progressively harder with each spawn. Its a nice new addition and really adds to the replay value.

So all in all the game is an improved continuation of Gears of War. But the improvements come in all the right places, more modes, more enemies and weapons and longer in-depth story. From the inspiring speech at the beginning to the end battle you will feel like your a bad ass gear ready to save mankind. As for the other things... well if it aint broken why fix it.

If your still unsure weather to buy this game then you obviously haven't player the first game!!!

9/10
