Tekken resurrects itself on the PSP, November 19, 2006 Rating: 8.6/10 By Mitch Lately, a lot of classic Playstation – Playstation 2 titles have been reappearing on the PSP, new installments that try to live up to their legacy. In the beginning, not all of them were good, as the PSP hadn’t been fully exposed to developers. Now that gamer designers have been able to fully grasp the capabilities of the PSP and have a full understanding, games are becoming more revamped and better than ever. Tekken: Dark Resurrection is one of these examples, and is our preview of a grand array of PSP games we have yet to see in the future.
We all remember Tekken: it’s the fighting game among fighting games. Tekken 3 came out for the original Playstation and literally blew my mind, and still does. Tekken 3 did what Street Fighter 2: Turbo tried to do: make fast paced and detailed gaming, but with stability. Tekken 3 accomplished all of those aspects, and became a very memorable fighting game, puzzling me on how they could fit such goodness onto a 700MB disc.
Tekken has the standard layout of most fighting games: two characters on a side scrolling screen beating each other to a pulp until the enemies energy bar is completely down, thus claiming them the winner. Tekken: Dark Resurrections graphics are quite stunning, and with its smaller resolution, makes the game look very clean and crisp with detailed 3D models that put most PSP games to shame. In this installment of the Tekken series, every single character from Tekken 5 is available, with a couple new ones and the return of Armor King, the cheetah headed wrestler with enough strength to break a human in half. The fighting is as detailed as it’s always been, if not more. Each character has its own wide set of moves, ranging from easy to perform to “how can I push all of those buttons at once?” hard to perform. Most characters have their signature moves, which can be hard to perform on the PSPs d-pad, which may become a nuisance as powerful moves may be necessary to take out harder characters.
Like Tekken 5, Arcade mode isn’t the only way to have fun. There are a handful of other familiar modes, including time attack and ghost profiles, a mode which puts you up against characters with new and difficult fighting styles.
As before, winning in Tekken gives you a pretty prize, giving you a prerendered video of the characters past, which can sometimes be funny or graphic. It starts to get addicting too, because you know some of these characters have a video worth watching.
Tekken: Dark Resurrection is a great game, and is its own genre of a fighting game by itself. Be sure to look out for future Tekken PSP titles, because stopping here would be a true disappointment.
