This time we don’t return to the worst holiday destination in the world but instead to the town next to it. Henry Townshend is the lead character in this installement but this time there are several differences to the previous 3 releases that bring a whole new depth into the series. We start the game in the apartment of the lead character after he wakes up from a very bizarre nightmare but things are still far from normal as the phone lines are dead, he cant open his windows, his neighbours don’t hear him even if their outside the front door and worst of all the front door is mysteriously locked from the inside.

A new feature to silent hill 4 is that whilst you’re in the apartment you see everything from a first person perspective which allows you to closer inspect the room for all the abnormalities that appear around you which include things written on the walls, blood in you’re bath and even a hole looking in to you’re neighbours bedroom as well as being able to see bloody handprints on the wall outside you’re apartment. You can leave the room but only through the hole in the bathroom which gradually gets bigger as the game progresses. after crawling through the whole you enter alternate dimensions of places near where you live but whilst doing this things quickly get back to traditional style with a new range of creatively disturbing creatures and a third person view.

Although Henry is the main character the most important character of the game is his neighbour Eileen. At first you will only see Eileen through the hole in you’re wall or through the peep hole in you’re front door but after playing the game for some time she will become key to you’re gaming experience and her survival as well as other aspects of play will determine which ending you will obtain.

People who expect to be able to take enemies out from a distance like in resident evil may be disappointed as silent hill 4 has only a couple of firearms and instead relies on melee combat with anything from a pipe to a set of golf clubs. You use these weapons in typical survival horror style which involves taking a stance and repeatedly pressing the action button to strike at you’re foes although unlike in the resident evil series where you stand in one place shoot move and repeat you can move whilst in you’re battle ready stance. As well as weapons there are also deterrents to stop the strange incidents that start to affect you’re apartment.

The graphics are perfectly matched to the style of the game bringing the disturbing environments to life but there are very few areas of the game that feature the traditional thick fog that helped give the previous titles a more chilling atmosphere. As with other survival horror titles the ability to be able to hear you’re enemies is very important and this game has fantastic sound effects to support it as well as a good soundtrack.

Although this has no main connection to previous titles some small connections can be made such as the pink rabbit in Eileen’s apartment. In many ways this is superior to the previous silent hill games and adds some new life to the series with some new game play styles but still somehow lacks the pleasure of previous silent hill titles. Silent hill 4: the room is however a very strong game with an excellent story, strong characters and good replay value and is a must have for all fans of the survival horror genre and easily outclasses most of the resident evil games but a control pad is an essential with this game as it will give you the more precise movement that is needed to dodge enemy attacks.
