Just Cause is one of the latest editions to the free roaming and sand box empire, which has so far taken over ten titles and has become a standard of gaming entertainment. A lot of these games fail to be up to par with the infamous Grand Theft Auto, or just fail in general. Just Cause may take GTA’s premise into its own hands, but it certainly doesn’t fail as a game itself.

Just Cause features the main character Rico Rodriguez, a Hispanic tough guy who’s been sent to the islands of San Esperito to put his assassination and espionage skills to work: he’s hit the islands to join the Peoples Revolutionary Army of San Esperito to overthrow Salvador Mendoza, a vicious dictator knee deep with the Montano drug cartel. To top it off, he may very well have weapons of mass destruction. Rico is also joined by the Riojas drug cartel, Montano’s rival. In any case, Mendoza isn’t going to go down easily… that’s why Rico is here.

For environments sake, the world is beautifully detailed, and gigantic. San Esperito is a heavy clutter of tropical islands, only a small percent you’ll actually need to visit to take missions. A majority of the land is nothing by desolate rainforest, but while it sounds like a waste of space, it absolutely helps with the games environment. Several of the islands urban areas are decently designed and allow you to have an open but cluttered space for walking and driving. San Esperito holds 88 vehicles, comprised of cars, boats, and aircraft. As the game revolves around the free roaming design, each of these vehicles are open for your taking, and the civilians are to your disposal if you’re feeling a bit edgy.

Rico is an open and flexible character, and a lot of his talents revolve around a far-shooting grappling gun and parachute. For parachuting, jumping out of plains and mountain tops will actually become an addicting thrill as Rico swirls towards the ground, releasing his parachute and blowing about wildly until he hits the ground. The grappling gun seems like it’s something out of batman: it’s a pistol sized weapon that fires a projectile which will latch onto surfaces, attached to a wire. Therefore, Rico can grapple himself onto planes and cars, and while he’s doing so his parachute can be enables, allowing him to parasail via vehicle connection.

Gun grappling is a very addictive sport, and keeps the replay ability up high. The games action is all about a lot of exaggerated actions and stunts. Cars handle well, but you can pull off some bizarre stunts that are pleasantly fun, yet unrealistic. Rico can also do some crazy moves, including jumping methods that launch him at Olympic heights. While it’s a bit crazy, it still keeps you entertained, reminding why Rico is such a hard edged character.

Mission wise, the story mode is short, but the missions are fun and varied. A lot of them are espionage related and end in swift assassinations across San Esperito. The weaponry may be smaller than expected, but it gets the job done.

Final words? Well, the game is new and fun. It’s cleared up since it’s PC demo, and is now short on bugs and glitches for consoles, so don’t expect too much interference. An 8.6 is well deserved in my opinion, especially if you’re a Grand Theft Auto fan.
