Solid, but mediocre, October 8, 2007 Rating: 6.7/10 By Mitch The concept for Juiced 2 and its predecessor are tired. The Fast and the Furious is old and I think a lot of us – at least the mature generation of gamers that surpass the age of 12 – have lost interest in the whole “tricking out” your ride and street racing. To sum it up, the whole genre was a fad a while ago and ultimately began drawing its curtains after Need for Speed Underground 2. But Juiced feels that the genre needs to live on and has spawned a sequel, and while it’s not necessarily a bad game, it often lacks originality and inspiration.
Juiced 2 is a street racing game. Enough said. You engage in high speed and aggressive races (and now drifts, something we all know more than enough about now) and have the ability to equip your car with a huge array of exterior designs and engine modifications. The visuals in the game actually look pretty nice and there’s a nice number out licensed vehicles to control and modify, but everything is cut short by the bored gameplay and problematic controls. I can’t quite grasp what’s wrong with controlling a car, but it’s not nearly as smooth as it should be. That being said, racing can sometimes be fun, but the control issues cover up the entertainment value to a point that helps make Juiced 2 less enjoyable.
Through out street races, players are given goals to complete in addition to winning the race. They might be achieving a few seconds of air time or wrecking another driver, and in fact make racing a little more edgy. This is one of those elements that keep Juiced 2 from being completely generic, and at times can leave you laughing with excitement or finishing a race proud with your accomplishments.
Most of Juiced 2 is the same thing over and over, and I continue to preach the same thing for racing games: unless you’re a hardcore racing fan, these games will get boring quickly. If you’ve played NFS: Underground, there’s no real point to playing Juiced 2 aside from taking in the updated visuals. The game itself isn’t particularly special but at times has potential to be fun. It solely depends on the person.
As a game, I give it 6.7. The cars look nice and realistic and the sound is pretty good. The game itself? Mediocre.
