Halo was one of the biggest selling and best loved games when it was launched alongside the xbox but now its success has now been taken to new heights with the pc version.

The story of the campaign mode gives you control of the last surviving Spartan known as the Master chief who is on an earth spacecraft called the pillar of autumn that has just fled from a ferocious battle with the technically advanced group of aliens called the covenant and ends up crashing on a strange ring-world called halo which is occupied by covenant forces. Upon landing on halo you immediately get attacked by covenant forces and end up uncovering a plan to destroy the human race. Although the story of the pc version is exactly the same as the xbox release there are several differences that will affect the game.

The first difference is that the co-operative play mode is now gone but it’s a worthy lose for the advantage of faster and more precise controls and an enhanced multiplayer experience which now includes new weapons and vehicles.

The only key characters in the game are
 • The Master chief who is a genetically modified super human killing machine with futuristic armour and shielding
 • Cortana who is the pillar of autumns artificial intelligence now implanted into you’re armour to support you in locating objectives and uncover halos purpose
 • Jacob keys are the pillar of autumn’s captain and although you don’t see much of him in the game he is important to the story of the game.
 • Foe hammer is the pilot of the pelican drop ship that transports you to several locations in the game.
As well as the key characters you will also be aided by several marines but unfortunately these marines are very dumb and die quickly but even with this problem they do have two good uses which are

To use the marines as a human shield or distraction
And the second use is that you can pick up the weapons and ammo they drop after their humiliating deaths.
The covenant is made up of several different alien races.

The strongest physically is the hunters who thick armour, a heavy shield and massive fuel rod cannon attached to their arms.
The smallest, most numerous and luckily the dumbest enemies on the game are called grunts. They are ridiculously easy to kill and hardly carry a dangerous weapon.
The jackals are the ugliest looking enemies in the covenant and have no real advantage other than their energy shields attached to their arms.
The most feared group in the covenant are the elites who are basically the covenant equivalent to the master chief. The only main difference is that you will sometimes come across one equipped with optic camouflage.
There is another group of aliens you start fighting with nearer the middle of the game and they are called the flood. The flood is a race of parasites that enter, mutate and take control of both human and covenant forces. Although they seem to act like a group of suicidal idiots we are told in the game that they are actually very intelligent.

Like with all first person shooting games one of the most important aspects is having a good range of weapons and halo does not disappoint. As well as having standard weapons such as assault rifles, shotguns and rocket launchers you also have the opportunity to take the weapons of the covenant which include plasma pistols and rifles as well as plasma grenades which stick to the enemy. Possibly the best weapon in the game is the needler which shoots out strange crystal like needles that home in on you’re enemies and explode after a small delay.

Halo also has numerous vehicles that you can take control of including an oversized jeep known as the warthog and the powerful scorpion tank. You can also take control of a couple of covenant vehicles the best being the banshee which is a small aircraft that is unfortunately slow but does have powerful weapons. Several vehicles such as drop ships and the covenant tanks are unfortunately not available for you to control.

The multiplayer mode is standard to several other fps games including death matches and capture the flag but the graphics are fantastic if put onto the best settings and the soundtrack is absolutely superb and is the best I have ever heard from an fps but unfortunately halo was not the revolutionary release for pc gamers that it was for those who played it on the xbox.
