Reviews Better then the rest, July 15, 2008 Rating: 9.0/10 By Malice213 In my own opinion, Halo 2 is the best out of the others (Halo 1, Halo 3.) If you play through every game you will realize that Halo 2 has the best storyline, weapons, fight scenes, and cinematic.fantastic sequel, November 13, 2005 Rating: 9.0/10 By cloud After the fantastic sales of halo on xbox and then pc it was inevitable that a sequel would arrive at some point and in November 2004 it finally arrived in the form of halo 2.
Although it does not start exactly at the point the original ended you can easily work out that the master chief has yet again performed the impossible and made it back home along with a few of his fellow soldiers and has been welcomed with a medal ceremony but things start to get back to normal very quickly as you are interrupted by a covenant invasion that has already destroyed all of earths defences except the Cairo station where the master chief is stationed. Yet again it’s up to you to take on the forces of the covenant virtually single-handed and defend mankind and earth in the ongoing war against the covenant hordes.
The game is mostly along the same lines of the first with most of the same enemies as before including jackals, hunters and the ferocious elites as well as the not so terrifying grunts but this time they are joined by a couple more enemies to take down.
- The drones are like large flying insects that don’t take much damage to kill but you have to hit them first. The drones are extremely agile and can dodge most of what you fire at them but they do have to land and rest. It is rare that a single drone could do you much damage as they carry plasma pistols but when they are in a group they can cause major damage especially on the rare occasion they carry needlers.
- The prophets are the leaders of the covenant and although not physically strong their words are sacred and any member of the covenant would willingly sacrifice themselves to defend them. You do fight a prophet halfway through the game.
- The brutes are a very powerful race with each member easily as powerful as both hunter and elite with a larger build than the hunters but seem to be very low in the covenant groups. The brute leader is instantly recognisable by his hair.
As well as new enemies there are also new key characters including captain Miranda keys who is the daughter of captain Jacob keys, Tartarus who is the leader of the brutes, the three prophets, something which seems to be the leader of the flood and the arbiter who is the second playable character in the game and who is also the elite commander that had control of the halo you blew up in the previous game.
Halo 2 has more additions in the form of new vehicles.[LIST][*]Phantom - Although you are not able to control this vehicle it is a hugely powerful dropship that has replaced the u-shaped dropship from the previous game. It has 3 large destructible plasma cannons and seems to be the favoured vehicle of the brutes.[*]Shadow - This is a land-based transport vehicle used to transport both troops and ghosts but is another vehicle you are not able to enter and it is seen in only one level of the game. It has very poor defences in the form of a plasma turret.[*]Spectre - This is the covenant equivalent of the warthog but can carry a driver as well as a gunner and two passengers. Its turret is a plasma turret with a fast rate of fire but it is a vehicle that you will not find often in the campaign.[*]Wraith - Although not a new vehicle to the halo series you are now allowed to commandeer it and it even has a small boost and two new anti-troop turrets but unfortunately the controls of the turrets remain a covenant secret even when you are playing as an elite.[*]Scarab - This huge walking tank is seen just twice in the game once at the start and once near the end and is virtually invincible with what seems to be a beam cannon on the front of it as well as carrying several covenant troops. Luckily it cannot kill you and just destroys the surrounding area and several vehicles.[*]Warthog - The warthog is another vehicle from the first halo but this time you can find it with a powerful gauss cannon which can make very short work of most things you find.[/LIST]All of the old vehicles are also in the game but with several differences which include brakes and better control of warthogs along with a boost for all available covenant vehicles.
Several new weapons have been added to this instalment in the form of the battle rifle which has replaced the assault rifle but has a three round burst with a 2x zoom, the SMG is a small sub machine gun, the brute shot which is a grenade launcher that doubles as a powerful melee weapon, the plasma sword which was wielded by some elites in the first game but has now appeared to have changed form, the beam rifle is the covenant equivalent of a sniper rifle and the carbine is a single shot equivalent of the battle rifle.
All the old weapons are included in the game but unfortunately the magnum handgun has been downgraded since the days of the pillar of autumn and has lost most of its power and its zoom.
The soundtrack and sound effects are perfect just as they were in the original with some fantastically composed tracks but unfortunately the graphics have some very poor glitches and sometimes fails to load smoothly but the levels are as well designed as the first instalment although they do seem more linear than the previous title. The multi-player is basically the same as the original but with new maps and updates of 2 previous maps.
Overall halo 2 offers a fantastic improvement on the first with more locations, vehicles and weapons with the option of duel wielding smaller guns and the ability to destroy most vehicles but it does miss out on several opportunities to expand such as a longer campaign greater multi-player.
Halo 2 is also available in a limited edition collector’s tin which comes with a bonus disk packed full of extras.
