Relive the arcade experience!, October 8, 2007 Rating: 9.0/10 By Mitch Crazy Taxi was the reason I wanted a Dreamcast for Christmas back in 2000. As a kid, my family visited Best Buy a lot; we were big on CD’s and home theater systems. I was always an avid gamer, and the video game section with open playable consoles and racks of games usually kept me busy and entertained. But, for some reason, all the way at the back of the store near home appliances was the glorious Sega Dreamcast, out in the open and loaded with Crazy Taxi. I got started, and didn’t finish playing until a few years later when I was officially burnt out. Now, recently, I discovered it again – it’s been ported to the PSP. It’s pure nostalgia in handheld glory.
For anyone who know, Crazy Taxi used to be a pretty whacky arcade game. You take the role of one of four spontaneous and outgoing drivers as they speed down busy city streets looking for passengers. The driving is out of this world and truly insane; but that’s half the fun. The fictional city roughly resembles San Francisco (or some other sunny west coast locale), so there’s a lot of hills you’ll be launching yourself off and sharp turns at 80 MPH.
The game is cheesy and fun. It’s a true arcade game, one of those modern pieces that just didn’t dive into any storylines or advanced features. Nothing in the game is realistic. Passengers want to travel to the other side of town in three minutes, so it’s up to you to drive as fast as possible and play bumper cars in the middle of the road and get them there on time.
Now, as a PSP title, Crazy Taxi isn’t half bad. Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars is actually Crazy Taxi and Crazy Taxi 2 combined, so I got a little bit more than I bargained for. Everything from the past was there and then some: there’s some cool new features including passenger stealing, where you butt heads with other energetic and insane drivers for the fare. This version also features custom tracks, a truly helpful addition since the DC version featured about seven of the same songs, over and over and over!
Unfortunately, something missing. The game I remember isn’t quite there anymore, and everyone who’s played it should agree with me on this one: it’s not nearly as fast as it used to be. The PSP just can’t render the same frame rate and speed Crazy Taxi was known for, so everything is slowed down quite a bit. It doesn’t completely ruin the game but it definitely defeats some of the nostalgia.
Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars is still wacky fun, either way. I’d recommend it to fun loving new comers to the series, but anyone who had a copy for the DC needs to pick this up.
